Things may not be that grim after all.

“Tough times are there so you can have a good time later on– and really appreciate it!”

No one knows the future, and the present might seem bleak, but British scientist Matt Ridley, author of this article makes a good point, there never has been a better time to be alive than now.

Dr. Ridley sees these advances as the inevitable byproduct of affordable energy and the incentives of capitalism. I think he might be missing a larger story.  None of those innovations would exist if the individual responsible had not been inspired by a spark of hope to create (often contrary to sound judgment) something absolutely new and innovative.  An advancing civilization needs more than a petri dish and carrot.  It needs people with a passionate yet irrational belief in what can be.

I propose that it is hope that gave the impetus to many of the positive changes in our civilization.  These accomplishments came from the desire, or motivation to make things better—which in turn enables progress.

Let me know what you think. Is it a better time for you overall? What role does hope play in making your life easier and happier?
